"Our World" Young Enterprise at New Mills School

190 primary school children from Years 5 and 6 at New Mills, Thornsett, Hague Bar, Hayfield, Newtown, St Mary’s and St George’s descended on New Mills School to learn more about gross domestic products, international trade and the complexities of modern commerce. New Mills Business and Enterprise College hosted a day of activities themed around ‘Our World’. The primary children worked alongside the secondary school’s Y7 to play The Trade Game and design and present a product, Dragon’s Den style.

The whole event was co-ordinated by Carol Phillips of Young Enterprise, who brought with her ten people from the world of business, including La Farge UK and High Peak Community Housing, to work with the youngsters.

Trevor Langston, deputy headteacher at New Mills Business and Enterprise College, was hugely impressed by the skills and commitment shown by the young people. “To see students aged 9, 10 and 11 getting to grips with complicated concepts of world economics was tremendous. They learnt through doing and put many of our adult helpers to shame with the speed of their thinking and problem solving.”
