Jaguar Maths Challenge at New Mills School

Each year as part of Enterprise Day, the maths department runs the Jaguar Challenge. This uses the Maths In Motion software and is designed for year 9 students to help with not only their maths skills, but also their enterprise skills, such as teamwork, organisation, personal effectiveness, communication, managing risk, managing change, application of number and ICT skills. In small groups, the students are given a scale drawing of the racetrack at Silverstone. They have to divide the track into small sections and corners and use their knowledge of maths to determine how fast their car can safely travel around the track. After an hour’s planning, they transfer their theories onto the computer and test their cars on the racetrack.

Each team is allowed 20 test laps as an opportunity to fine tune their cars and calculations before the final race. Last year’s students really enjoyed the challenge and this year’s students are looking forward to beating their times!
